SERVICES

Personalized support

I coach and tutor students on reading comprehension and writing assignments and research papers for ELA and social studies. I also specialize in helping writers of all ability levels craft beautiful, meaningful, and effective personal statements for applications to high school, college, and graduate programs. With years of experience teaching struggling learners under my belt, I tailor my approach to my students’ needs in order to ensure that their voices and their insights shine through in the final piece.

Students who work with me on a regular basis for assignments often report feeling more independent after several months, and I take pride in seeing their growth. Students working on college essays typically receive excellent feedback on their college essays from guidance counselors and program directors, and often I learn that they have been admitted to their top-choice schools.

In addition to writing coaching, I also have extensive classroom and real-life experience with Algebra 1, Geometry, and French, and I have written scores of effective IEPs and can offer coaching and strategies for families of students with disabilities.

About Me

MY NAME IS Alex

I graduated from NYU’s unique Gallatin School with a BA in Individualized Study in 2012 and then began teaching special education at another innovative educational institution, Quest to Learn Upper School in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. At Quest, a school built around original game-based curricula, I learned many innovative methods for working with students with disabilities and unique learning styles, but above all I learned that nothing takes the place of getting to know your students. I earned my MSEd in Teaching Urban Adolescents with Disabilities from LIU Brooklyn in 2014 and I left the classroom in 2019 to pursue a second masters from Université Paris 8 in Saint Denis, just outside Paris. I earned my MA in Philosophy in 2022. I’ve been teaching and tutoring for almost ten years and I look forward to learning how I can help new clients!

Testimonials

We have not regretted one second working with Alex on our son’s personal essay for his college applications. Alex asked him questions, offered directions, made comments, gave organizational advice, provided background information, motivated him to do his own research, and most importantly, inspired him with encouraging words. Since then, both of my children have worked with Alex on class assignments and I only hear how helpful and supportive he is without interfering too much and taking over. Alex clearly has a talent for working with young people. So far, the end results have always exceeded expectations.

Alex helped me craft my personal statement for applications to medical residencies. I was wrestling with combining intensely personal and political topics without crossing any lines and I know we hit the right balance. My advisor at my medical school told me it was the best personal statement she had ever read. Throughout the interview process, several program directors told me that my personal statement was what got me my interview.

Alex was able to intuitively understand what I was trying to get across even when I struggled with the ideas myself. However, instead of leading me in a direction he felt worked, he asked precise questions that focused my thoughts. He respected my creative risks but also reigned me in to ensure I was always as clear as possible. He worked so delicately that even I could only hear my own voice in my writing. As a result of our work together, I was accepted to my top choice graduate program at Columbia.

Working with Alex was an absolute pleasure. He helped me one-on-one to develop a story to really express who I am as a person.
